Air contamination is a worldwide issue. Efforts are being made to fight against it, this is a good sign we are moving in the right direction.
The world’s first hydrogen-powered tram has been created in China. The company behind this amazing streetcar is China South Rail Corporation’s subsidiary Sifang Company.
Thanks to the help of local scientists and researchers the first tram was manufactured last week. The whole process and development took 2 years after solving plenty of technical issues and challenges.
The tram uses hydrogen as fuel and allows it to travel 100 km (62 miles) per charge at speeds that can go up to 70 km/h (43mph) and has space for 380 passengers. Even more impressive, it takes just 3 minutes to refuel the tram’s hydrogen fuel cells.
This breakthrough makes China the only country in the world to successfully implement hydrogen powered technology in railway transportation.
What about gas emissions?
Water, pure water. Since the temperature generated is less than 100 degrees Celsius the only emission will be our most precious liquid. Hydrogen technology is being already used in cars but this is a huge step forward for tram and railway services.
“The average distance of tramcar lines in China is about 15 kilometres, which means one refill for our tram is enough for three round trips,” Liang Jianying, chief engineer of the Sifang Company.
St. Petersburg, Berlin, Helsinki, Budapest, Vienna, Dallas, LA and the list can go on of cities that could start making some difference by using this type of technology in their tram lines.
