As soon as I go through Kickstarter projects I stumble upon this one and caught my attention completely. 30 seconds onto the video and it is clear, I want one.
Halfbike II, a self explanatory name, needs little introduction to understand what it is for and how it works. This vehicle trains your balance and reflexes in a completely new way.
It is without a doubt the hottie on Kickstarter right now. With an initial goal of $50,000 Halfbike has gathered more than $180,000 in pledges and keeps going strong.
This is the second version designed by Kolelinia a Bulgarian company specialized on alternative transport systems. The product of their innovation is a pedal-powered scooter, like those I remember using as a kid. Wired UK described it as a mix of bike with a segway, which is pretty accurate.
Their creators claim that “Halfbike is a sort of an extension to the body that allows a smooth and intuitive ride.” The only way to control it is with your whole body, not only with your arms, in standing position.
Halfbike weights only 8kg (18lb) making it very easy to carry around, take it to the stairs or lift. It’s size makes it even easier to place it in your apartment. Since it is foldable it also takes much less space than a normal bike.
But don’t get rid of you bike just yet. Kolelinia highlights that the purpose of their innovation is for you to have fun and experience something different.
Another thing to have into account of is that the current model doesn’t have lights and fenders, so no driving in the dark or in rainy days, unless you like extreme conditions. However, if their campaign funds go beyond $250,000 they have promised to add these 2 key features.
If you are dying to get one, this is the best chance to get a good deal. The price right now is $399 on their Kickstarter campaign and when it gets to retail it will go up to $599.
